I will answer your question with several questions.

What's wrong with the AV you use now? You are using one, right?
Have you tried any of the popular brands of AV out there?
What features do you want from your AV?
Has any particular brand of AV given problems on your system in the past?
Do you want to pay for the AV, and/or the updates, or do you want it all to be free?

No i don't have any AV installed on my pc currently
I have tried Panda, couple more, can't remember their names
I'm just looking to get my pc protected from virus and all, In particular, I'm looking for a software that updates virus definations on its own

And off course it will be FREE! :-)

If you're looking to pay for a subscription, I'd recommend NOD32; Unpaid--AVG.

peat, in reference to what you said about sameer's choice of Symantec corp...

While I respect people's decision to take the Symantec corp route, avast! has the same advantages and is free to use, 100% legally.
Personally, I don't see the need to use corp AVs when there are perfectly good freeware alternatives.

Oh well, different strokes for different folks I guess... *shrug*

I can only give advice on programs I'v tryed . Didn't mean to offend ,but yes good point . I just thought that since someone took the time to post it the verifieds, it was worth a look. Wish I could try two antivirus side by side to compare myself . Or firewall for that matter, was reading about Sygate tonite . :)

No no, don't get me wrong... I wasn't offended mate. :)

It's not a big deal at all. Just that my philosophy is... why crack when there's freeware?
But hey... everyone is entitled to run thier box however they see fit, and that's cool.

Edit: but even I would change to Symantec Corp if avast! ever let me down. ;)

I have used Symantec Corp for years and it's let me down time after time.
If I could get Dr. Web working proper it would be my choice, but until then its BitDefender for me.

ok so i scanned my computer with Symantec Antivirus v10, and it found 5 files which were infacted by some sort of virus. The program automatically quarantined those files....now i m wondering if that's safe? I mean i want to delete those files permanently, but the program is not allowing me to do so.......How can i remove those files?

Don't worry about them. They cannot do anything while in quarantine.

Do you have real time protection checked?
A good 'real time protection' should have never aloud those file to get infected. I had this same problem with every version of corp.

my comp. got virus cause i didn't have any anti virus installed, So those viruses were found after i installed symantec. I have enabled the real time protection, so i hope i don't get virus anymore.

oh BTW i have figured the way to delete the infected files, I had to change the settings:
Configure-->File System Auto-Protect-->Actions-->Changed "First Action" & "Second Action" to my likings.

Thanks guys..

Ok, I see. Just after using it for years and testing, I have decided it's not for me or my system.
