I'm disappointing about ET now...

speeds are lower, much less torrents....

I found torrentbytes is really fast tracker, you can get real good speed even there are few seeders, there was about 20 seeders&20 leechers downloading "Cossacks2" today, and I get it with the 800kBps(~6.5Mbit) average speed
:)

Slow speed at ET?no i never ever had a issue downloading from ET always top speed completing 4GB files in less than 8hours.I love ET there the best new torrents fast no waiting times at least for me.

I didn't say it's slow... I said it's slower now, than it was before...

some time ago I could reach about 500-600kB/s, now I get only 250-300kB/s... but it's fast enough, I think...

Think users are in trouble?
Yeah, I was wondering that as well.

I guess it depends on whether they want to research their logs and go through the trouble of identifying users' IPs and then tracking them down.

In reality, I suspect they won't do this but instead go after the operators of the site with the clear intent on scaring us users.

In the mean time I have stopped seeding any files related to the site just to in case they're monitoring and/or logging IPs.

peace

I dont know how much effort it would really take from the FBI since they practically have infinite resources. What I'm very worried about was this morning they were up so I continued seeding a movie.

During my day here at work I get a bit bored so I'll check their site and see if any cool new files were added, low and behold to get the red page of death. I'm now paranoid because all that time since like 6am my stuff was uploading heh.

All attempts to reach the forum page are greeted with a message from the FBI and the ICE, alerting users of the closure of the site.

Long-term administrator, and short-term gigalo, SithLord has announced that all users are to immediately format or face possible jail time, fines, or ROFLMAO's.

Other users of the site have speculated that the website has in fact been hacked, and the warning message is a joke. Sif.

A hidden message, possibly a device similar to the pi symbol in the movie 'The Net', states the word RTJKJAS. This is to be interpreted as the arrival of the record industry into our very thoughts and minds. I for one welcome our new record industry overlords.

EliteTorrents.org Hacked

The BitTorrent community has seen its fair share of indexing sites go offline - whether voluntarily or involuntarily. Sites like LokiTorrent, UK-Torrents, s0nikfreak, TVTorrents and YouceffTorrents have all either fallen under the weight of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America.) Today, it appeared another website has fallen, EliteTorrents.org.

The homepage of this website was replaced with a permanent shutdown notice, purportedly announced by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and U.S. Customs. The FBI is under the United States Department of Justice, while U.S. Customs is under the Department of Homeland Security.

EliteTorrents.org is hosted in the United States, however the owner lives in the Netherlands. The involvement of both departments would seem logical, considering the geographical coverage of the torrent site.

However, while one’s initial reaction may lead an individual to believe EliteTorrents.org is under a criminal investigation, further examination challenges this thought.

1) The neither FBI nor U.S. Customs has never directly or exclusively shut down any torrent site. All site closures have been the result of an MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) action or investigation.

2) An odd message on the bottom right of EliteTorrents.org states “RTJKAS.” This message only appears when the page is highlighted.

3) The topic message on EliteTorrent.org IRC channel states, “Topic is 'Site: Down | Tracker: Up | Forums: Down | Radio: OFF | News : Site will be up when it's fixed. Stop asking.'”

4) The topic message on thier IRC channel now states, "Latest news:ET Was DNS Hacked (sithlord.)"

From the evidence presented, in all likely circumstances this is an elaborate hack, followed by an equally elaborate hoax. In fact the job is so elaborate, if one does an IP/Domain name trace, it ultimately ends at www.dhs.gov (Department of Homeland Security.) Incidentally, this sophisticated portion of this current circumstance is the only real counter-evidence to suggest that it may in fact be a true enforcement action. Slyck.com has contacted the FBI newsroom and awaits confirmation or denial of this situation.

they act like they lose so much money when in reality, people using sites like that have absolutely no plan on buying the software/movie, etc anyway. I cant necessarily blame them, I'd hate to have my hard work stolen too, but part of the fault is because of the MPAA and RIAA. They should try to protect their own stuff, like computer games and such. They should assume the full responsibility of their own wares.

Its like trying to say you broke the law because you downloaded a tv episode. When its perfectly legal to use tivo or record it on a vcr for later viewing. heh

Only thing these organisations try to do, is scare people off. Every single user not dl music or movie is a possible >$10,- extra for the industry, and with that these organisations try to prove to their 'sponsors' they have a right to be paid, cause they're so succesfull.... ;)

MPAA, FBI and U.S. Customs Shut Down EliteTorrents
May 25, 2005
Thomas Mennecke

Earlier reports discussing EliteTorrents.org have been confirmed to be an enforcement action taken by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This morning, all indications dictated the situation was not an enforcement action, considering the amateurish violation notice coupled with the official word from EliteTorrents’ administration stating they were DNS hacked.

Although the violations notice visually unimpressive, this would turn out to be part of an overall enforcement action by the MPAA, FBI and ICE. When visiting the site, one is confronted with the following notification:

"This Site [EliteTorrents.org] has been permanently shut down by the Federal bureau of Investigation and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement"

"The individuals involved in the operation and use of Elite Torrents network are under investigation for criminal copyright infringement"

These are very serious words, especially when using the term "...and use..." to imply users may vulnerable to criminal charges. According to the FBI press release, 10 search warrants have been issued against leading members of EliteTorrents.org.

"This morning, agents of the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) executed 10 search warrants across the United States against leading members of a technologically sophisticated P2P network known as Elite Torrents. Employing technology known as BitTorrent, the Elite Torrents network attracted more than 133,000 members and, in the last four months, allegedly facilitated the illegal distribution of more than 17,800 titles-including movies and software-which were downloaded 2.1 million times. "

The press release also explains why the administration of EliteTorrents initially believed this was the result of a DNS hack.

"In addition to executing 10 warrants, federal agents also took control of the main server that coordinated all file-sharing activity on the Elite Torrents network."

In the MPAA's press release, the organization was adamant about ridding the Internet of EliteTorrents.org, due to the fact it helped proliferate "Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith." Star Wars' prerelease had the MPAA extremely frustrated, and vowed to pursue those distributing the movie. It appears the MPAA made good on that promise.

"Carrying out what is known as Operation D-Elite, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed search warrants against prominent members in Elite Torrents’ membership," said Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) President and CEO Dan Glickman. "Elite Torrents was one of the first peer to peer networks to post an illegal copy of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith before the movie officially opened in theaters last Thursday."

The FBI press release expands on the MPAA's philosophy, "For example, the final entry in the Star Wars series, "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," was available for downloading on the network more than six hours before it was first shown in theatres. In the next 24 hours, it was downloaded more than 10,000 times."

This situation remains fluid, as the extent of the FBI and U.S. Custom enforcement is unclear. For now, only the administration is looking at criminal charges, however the implied possibility against users remains real.

Okay.. the status...
ET ain't coming back.. ever...

Duffman and G we're arrested, and Krylon and root are waiting if they too are going to be arrested.

For the rest it are the big (US) uploaders who will get arrested... we'll see in the future...

Anyways, there are enough other sites where U can get the torrents so..

looks like MPAA had Pisexy big time:

2005-05-26 - Just a heads up -- anyone uploading a Star Wars episode 3 torrent (of any kind) will lose their uploads and get a warning as of 05/26/05.

Believe me i know im gonna sound real naive on this one, but how exactly are they gonna catch people who where using the site? and of course is that limited to only americans or does the long arm of the law extend to the rest of us as well?

You know what caused ET to shut down...Its the damn star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith movie, which was available through EliteTorrents six hours before its first showing in theaters...This obviously drove these peeps nuts...and look whats the end result now!

funny they didn't care about the distribution of Mindhunters over 1.5 years in advance

Anyone noticed that the clip that they play is actually the trailer.
Thats rather funny if so as Ive never even seen the trailer. It would make sence though as they never even get the torrent or open a client. However I think its just intended to be a very strong message and withouht narration makes it even more so perhaps...

ET was a thriving community, and I will miss all the people there. The staff were even thinking of producing ET merchandise. It looks like I am never now going to own an Elite Torrents T-shirt

Thanks again

I read the FBI website pertaining to the arrest and none of the arrest nor investigation dealt with overseas. Was ET lying to there members and themselves thinking it was ok to have there HQ in the states?

I don't think so, atleast not with whats going on with ET. Et is being said to be the first site with the workprint of SWIII. I don't know if thats true or not, but thats why its a criminal case at this point. I think the criminal case has to run its course before a civil case is filed

ontopic: Elitetorrents was a great, site - superfast, good releases. But what did they expect would happen with their server located in the US. I don't know the details, but if they were in fact the first to service Episode 3, thats pretty stupid. Leave it to a torrent site it another country.

But really, the weirdest thing about all this is the fbi page. Its obviously for real cus of the release on the fbi pages.. neither the page itself or the process is very professional. That website looks like the entrance to a 5 year olds homepage saying "girls keep out" or something...

SWROTS = Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
MPAA = Motion Picture Association of America aka the guys who threaten to sue you if they find you downloading movies
