How does the series go, and how many Movies are there?

Looking at the anime, the first movie is Ghost in the shell. However, GitS:SAC is before it in the story line (don't forget GitS:SAC 2nd gig either ^^).

As for movies, there are only two, GitS and then GitS: Innocence (which continues the storyline of the first movie)

Dunno' if you can even talk about the movies and the anime being in the same storyline.

Both are different takes on the original manga, there are no tachikomas in the first movie for instance, yet they are a large part of the story in the comic, and in the series. Also, they call the series Stand Alone Complex for a reason.

You should read the manga if you haven't, both volumes 1 and 2.

Cool, in case you can't read japanese they were published in the US by dark horse, so the english translations are fairly good as far as I can tell, there are a few pages from the (actual, not some stupid spoof) japanese manga that weren't included in dh's version, but you can find them on a few sites on t'interweb last I checked, in case you wanna' see Kusanagi naked and erm, doing stuff.
