im thinking of getting my xbox chipped with the "xecuter 3 ce" chip.
my box is either a 1.5 or 1.6 as its a special edition crystal.

my main uses for chipping are to be using it as a media centre, xbmc,
palying backup games of the hdd, and using it as storage for downloaded movies and tv series. and maybe a small linux install for surfing the net?

since im using it for that ill be needing a bigger hard drive.
the one im thinking of getting is this (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=7555530449&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=64860) one, is the 16mb cache going to be noticeable, or will 8mb do.

also how do i update the bios on the modchip, can that be done from the xbox, or do i need a bios flasher.

should this be pretty easy to do?

The hard drive is fine. Flashing the chip the first time is a one shot deal I fucked up and had to buy the flasher, but It was my fault. And after that you just hit a button on the dashboard, select the bios, hit flash and restart, very easy.

cool. so all of my above requirements should be met with no problem, surfing net etc.
also how do you get files onto the box, just ftp?

ftp, or you could burn to cd and copy the files over. If your box is a 1.6 or 1.6b. check out the "Extend life expectancy of 1.6 board" on the xbox-scene forum. You will want to know about this.
X3 chip is good, but most features aren't really needed but are cool.

had a look, hope ive got a 1.5 box,
is this whta the lpc rebuilder is for the 1.6 box? or is it seperate.

FTPing is easy, saves media, just get yourself a good ftp program, like FlashFXP, set your xbox ip to be 192.168.0.x and the password and user name are xbox/xbox. All easy. Only thing you have to look out for is that if you have xblive now, and you upgrade the harddrive they see the hd size change and ban your eeprom.

Yeah xblive is expensive and annoying, but at least on the xbox360 it will be free.

Softmodding can do all of the things you want to do... :)

Livy
05-19-2005, 10:26 AM
yeah, but isnt hardware modding more stable and less problems,
and no problems with live enabled games updating my dashboard and mucking up my softmod,
since the machine will be connected to the net.

I don't like the idea of soft modding at all, it just seems like a cheaper less effective way to do something reletivaley easy with a soldering iron.

or without a soldering iron if its a 1.5 box. :)

is there any cheaper chips that can do what i want? whats the best make etc,

Sure I have the xecutor 2.3b lite, and they have cheaper versions with out al lthe bells and whistles.

Livy

might go for the xecuter 2.6 ce, its half the price of the 3.
i take it the xecuter is the best one to go for.

Duffman

I like the, I read a lot of horror stories with other chips back when I was doing the mod, but the x2.3 was reletivaley painless. Get yourself familiar with irc though, and efnet, your gonna be there a lot now.

Duffman

Depends on your soldering skills, how good are you?

Livy

thinking bout getting this, Link (http://www.baldbouncer.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/107{8}22?osCsid=456b5df84d27888929f8664ddff616f9)

its the xecuter 2.6 ce with the xapt3r solderless adapter, comes to £32.30 includign delivery,
or is there a cheaper option, or is it better to keep with a decent chip since ill probably be using it alot and plan on keeping it a while.

I've done a 2.3 and 2.6 so far (2.6 was on my mates) both are extreamly easy to do. I've never soldered anything in my life before and it was piss. I found the hard part was the fucking Bios that they don't supply you with.

Livy

ok, cool, right, so to run through things.
1. find out box version
2. order chip
3. open box and install chip.
4. flash bios
5. backup old hdd via ftp
6. install new hdd
7. install apps and replace backups.
8. have fun with new apps and games.

also is slayers auto installer any good, or would i be aswell installing myself

edit: also how can i get games i download in iso format to my xbox without burning them

You can use craxtion (http://www.craxtion.com/) (free) to extract the files from the iso and then FTP 'em to your xbox.

Livy

Yes i used the slayers auo installer and i highly recommend it as it comes with Avalaunch and Evox

as for the games use a program called Quix http://www.teamavalaunch.com/qwix/

qwix will upload and extract the iso at the same time! :w00t:

so you WONT have to extract the files out of the iso then upload it through ftp

isnt auto installer deluxe for softmodding as well?

also another thing u may want to add is that, that you have to lock your HDD or else ur xbox wont boot up...

and make sure ur new hdd is lockable thers a list somewhere...u may want to check xbox-scene.com and search...

in the autoinstaller for slayer theres an option for locking and unlocking hdds...

hopefully its not a repost..

just bought my hdd, 300gb maxtor diamondmax 10 with 16mb cache for £76 :)

also looking at more chips, is the duox 2 chip any good, if i get that it will save me about £20 over the xecuter 2.6

To be honest you wanna get Slayers as its the standard, think of it as Windows in mark share. Its easy to install and works great.

did you check that the hard drive is xbox compatable by the way as some arn't.

Livy
05-25-2005, 02:38 PM
checked, and seems everyone who used this drive has been able to lock it.

Livy
05-26-2005, 02:25 PM
bugger, just opened up my xbox, and i have a 1.6 box, so looks like the solderless option is out the window.
got my hard drive this morning, special delivery next day for £76, saved me £40 over ebuyer prices, and was a hell of alot quicker.

edit: can anyone recomend where to get the xecuter 2.6 chip in the uk.
the two places ive found are
Baldbouncer.co.uk (http://www.baldbouncer.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/78{11}24?osCsid=693e0e2e16ab8d7bb9742115f0e147f7) and
Kanection.co.uk (http://www.kanection.co.uk/product.php/261/0//590f21191c5ad6f59d4e1047862ded0e)
has anyone used either of these places. or recomend anywhere else that has them.

been reading up on the "life expectancy of a 1.6 box" http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=305938&st=0
is this still a problem, or have the chip os's fixed this, or should i got with the duox 2 which is reported not to have this problem, or get the x2.6 and do the fix.
