Insert DVD - Create Avi/Mpeg/DivX

i've tried DVD2AVI, Dr DivX and a few others, none of them seem to work!

do i need to have a DVDRW drive cos i only have a cdrw/dvdrom drive, and is there any guide to using the above properly.

fast and easy, that's all i'm looking for :(
