View Full Version : Computer Heat in room...

Ok..my computer has 7 fans in it and is currently not overclocked at all.

My dad keeps bitching at me because its around 100 degrees around here and the computer heats my room up a TON..which it does.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any ways to make it not put off near as much heat..

I was thinking underclocking a little and turning off some of the fans...should the CPU fan and like 1 exhaust be able to keep an understock system cool?

I doubt it will make all that much difference. If it is running at full load, you will probably only save about 10W max. If it isn't running full load it won't even be as much as that.

The thing is to check what else could be giving off heat - the biggest culprit is usually the monitor. Make sure it goes into power saving mode VERY quickly (2 minutes is usually about right). Better still get an LCD monitor.

Another thing that gives out lots of heat is your graphics card - make sure that's not overclocked too. In fact underclocking that except when playing games will probably give you a much bigger heat saving than underclocking the cpu, and will probably be less noticeable.

I restricted all the air vents sept in the av room, should try it.

Liquid cooling. I love it. I only have one fan...and that's in the radiator. :01:

lol 7 fans here also

bigdawgfoxx
05-24-2005, 11:41 AM
nah each fan is at 25dbs...its just a little hum actually. And yes by underclocking i meant the cpu and graphics card. And I always manually turn the monitor off immediatly when im not usuing it..and it does put off a lot of heat, but if i leave my computer on and the monitor off all day it heats my room up like 10 degrees...i like sweat in my room lol

or get some ducting and make it vent straight out a vent in you room. or out the window. should help a bit.

This is a real problem for us too...we normally have 15-25 PCs running all the time and it gets quite toasty during the summer.

Ceiling fans will help.

My dad is complaining about the air from the computer making the AC unit think its really hot and making it run a lot..running up the bill, not the computer. And I cant open the window its 100 degrees outside lol. I told my dad i was gona build a vent out..but idk how well it would do and it would be a big hole in the wall..lol and the heat from the monitor is HORRIBLE..but i might try the venting thing.

is the computer in teh same room as the thermostat?

if not then it won't matter how much heat the computer is putting out.

My room is RIGHT next to it and the heat comes under the door and is only like 4 feet away from it...so I think it does affect it some...MuchSPL...I dont really understand what u mean by closing off all the vents except the av room..

hell yes. i have a total of 3 fans. 2 in the back for exhaust, and one that i think is intake on the side, but it's completely covered by a thich layer of dust, so not much help there. thats 3 case fans. and then i got the massive heatsink and my tornado. if i place my hand on my case, the only place i can feel a weee bit of heat is near my 2x 200gb hdds. they run hotter than my cpu now. rite now both are above 45 C!!! :pinch:

dude, u really don't need 7 fans. get like 2 exhaust and 2 intake. that's prob the max u'll need.

my setup rite now, my cpu never goes higher than 41C during games. my graphx card goes up to 40 on really really hot days (80-90F). what u might be doing is overexhausting. ur blowing too much air out when u don't really need to.

take out a few fans. seriously

 yep, my magic maxtor 120gb hdd. it's sitting in my shelf rite now. i replaced both my 120gb hdd's with 200gb hdds. now they get pretty hot. when defraging, they go up to 50C!!! rite now they're doing 40'sC. sigh. i miss my magical self cooling 120gb maxtor. lol

I am NOT trying to make you look bad, but if you insist on peddling snake oil prepare to defend yourself (remember, LOTS of people read this stuff even if they don't post, so accuracy is a good thing).

You cannot "overexhaust" a PC. There is a finite amount of heat/air available to move and you cannot exceed that amount with the fans and enclosures we typically use. People are always talking about "negative" and "positive" pressure in their cases as though that was even possible...it isn't.

BTW, why are you bragging about having a fan that is so loaded with dust that it is non-functional?

That's just 'cos you haven't tried properly :snooty:

I'd have thought the man with the space/time-warping dvd-burner would know this.

All you need to do is to make it airtight, 'cept for a really big sucker at the back, and then you suck out all the air and then...erm.

however you must realize that the heat generated has to go

Here's an idea.

Since hot air is (presumably) coming under your door, and then rising (as hot air does) past the thermostat, why not simply make a circular shield from a piece of card and put it around the thermostat to divert the hot air.

If your dad is right about the heat from the computer this should temporarily cure the problem and you can look for a more permanent solution. If it has no effect you have shown that your dad is wrong.
