For my next machine I want two of those dual core opterons.

Just 'cos it's cool.

Well, not cool as in low temperature, more like OMFGthaTRoxcORSPWNage cool.

Imagine the up'ed performance :)

But godamit, i bet i'll range in the $700+ for the lower end of these X2's

I can order them already, I think  Up to 4800"x2" 2MB L2. Not as expensive as I thought they'd be, but the best ones cost more than the FX-55s already.

Not in stock yet though, obviosly.

The best ones go for 9590kr, that's about $1315 US.

The X2 4200 (2.2Ghz/1MB L2) goes for about $700 here, which means that it should be cheaper in the US.

Are you sure?
The Opterons are socket940 and that platform has been developed as a server/business product.
Thus, it is unlikely to ever get the drool-factor goodies that 939 based machines will...stuff like high-end sound or even SLI.

One of my co-workers built a dual processor Opteron system and my rig kicks it's ass in benchmarks like SuperPi and Sandra memory bandwidth.
He could prolly build a spreadsheet twice as fast as I could, but who cares?

With the information now available, dual core chips don't appear to offer much to the home-user/gamer at all.
Naturally, this could change if software is optimized for dual core CPUs, but that could take quite a while as the initial focus will be on business applications.

It's what I want.

If it wasn't for this pesky thing called money getting in the way I would get it, too

I know it's about as impractical as is possible, but I want it the same way I want an SLi setup (too bad I couldn't combine the two btw) or a striped raptor array. I want it 'cos I've never put something like it together.

I just wanna' try stuff out, you know?

Realistically speaking my next setup, which won't be built for a long time yet as I love this one  , will probably be something more mundane since the kind of cost an opteron system would bring can't really be justified :(

Though it would be excellent as a server for the LANage, and I bet it would do well if you wanted a heap of running dls and whatnot, and a gameserver, while playing on it.

It'd prolly fold like nothing else.

That's actually all you had to say.

@clocker: are you sure that will work, I'm sure they'll want some money, if only for shipping.

Did you click your heels together three times?
