Lets say that you didn't know somebody who claimed insurance on their laptop, telling the company that it was stolen when it's really still at the person you don't knows house, lets say that that persons been using it, connecting to the interweb after committing insurance fraud and has gotten away with it for the better part of a year. Now lets say that that person wishes to sell their laptop, and might be wandering the following.

If they were to sell the laptop to somebody, and that somebody was to take it to a shop to be fixed up or whatever, could the shop find out that the laptop was stolen?

If memory serves, they track them through a number in the BIOS? Or something along those lines :ermm:

of course the insurance company couldn't care less if they've not bothered investigating thus far, but still :ermm:

it's only hypothetical?

Would it be worth hypotheticaly not only formatting the hard disk, but also fdisking it to remove all partions and data, then re-formatting.

Oh and possibly say flashing the BIOS, tho' I don't know if that would change the ID number, if such exists.

Anyhow, what would the chances of it being broken, taken for repair and the repairer checking the BIOS against some sort of list of stolen machines. Especially if it were sold to someone who tends to fix their own and doesn't go to repair shops.

Hypothetically speaking of course.

it's only hypothetical?

yes, yes it is

JPaul, ebay won't do, the laptops got a bad rep for breaking down ect, they wouldn't get much for it at all, certainly not enough as they would via postcards in shop windows ....or at least that's what one would imagine :ermm: it's already cutting out and switching off, often too, after heat builds up from watching a dvd or playing a game :pinch:

Maybe it could be sold to a foreigner?

I highly doubt they'll be tracking 'em all over the world.

What about the BIOS flashage.

Does anyone know if that effects the ID number.
