Use a router instead.

Most ISPs give you one IP. With a router, it uses that IP and then it gives you additional (internal) IPs for each PC.

A hub works fine for me . I use a firewall , the hardware filewall is nice tho . If you have XP pro just run the network setup wizard . (On both computers )

@VB shaw gives you two IP addresses, but you have to ask for it. I found out the hard way.

We me it was a matter of cost . I wanted to go wireless but roomie is shy on money. So it was $25.00 for a 50 ' rj45 cable, I had the hub.

I think this guide could explain better than I could :

Should be no problem .Did you run on both computers ? Reset the hub or turn it off for a minuet or two. The link I gave you should explain it. I can't post It properly but just right click and copy then paste to your browser bar.

Link for above. (http://www.petri.co.il/what's_network_setup_wizard_in_windows_xp.htm)

@peat: If you want to post a link click on 'Go Advanced' then click on the 'Insert Hyperlink' icon. It's the one with the globe and chain link like this: http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/synapse_kt8c/editor/createlink.gif
