I watched the whole England innings, I was in work for teh Aussies batting. It was brilliant!

By the end of the match, my missus had stopped shopping for clothes on the interweb () and was sat beside me on the settee, waiting to see if we could do it!

She did advise that it was a bit unfair, with there being "only two of our team against all those Australians" but she seemed fairly enthralled.

Can't wait for the test series :D

There's catching a ball as well.

England have dropped Thorpe and included Pieterson for the first test which starts next Thursday.

This worries me slightly altho' I cannot wait to see how he bats in a test match scenario. His patient approach regarding settling himself in the one-dayers suggests to me that he can play test cricket but the selectors really have thrown him in at the deep end.

If he succeeds, it will spell the end of Graham Thorpe's test career. Ending with an average of circa 45 is something he can be proud of. Boycott was probably the last England player to retire with an average superior to this.

I just made that up but I can't think of anyone else who did better

Australia already went over there and flogged them easy in India which they hadn't done in over 30 years!!!

that last test where aust had to get 97 ??? and were bold out for 92 hahaha last test I think aust has lost and probably the only test they have lost in the past 5 years

India do have some great batsman but there bowlers just suck its their weakness

First Test today :01:

Unfortunately for England, Australia won the toss on a glorious day and have decided to bat. The Lords pitch is reknowned for being lifeless for the first couple of days and then offering more to the bowlers subsequently.

Australia are currently 49 for 1.

I'm off home at three to watch the last session :D

178 for 8

Down to the tail now, the middle order proved a bit more tricky to remove. Don't know what's happened with the pitch - I can't believe, altho' I want to, that England's attack have pulverised the Aussie batsmen. I'd guess that there must be something in it for the bowlers, which is tres unusual for Lords on a blazing hot summer's day.

I guess we will know when Trescothick and Strauss walk out there and start batting. Hopefully for the Afternoon session :w00t:

Steven Harmison took a fivefor (5-43).

True but basketball is better. :P

Cricket is like baseball to me...just with a "can't miss bat" and no diamond.

I imagine it's fun to play though. I like all sports to a degree whether it's as a spectator or actually participating.

For most it's what you grew up with.

Brillant day's cricket yesterday. McGrath bowled superbly for the Aussies, as did Lee toward the end.

Since my prediction about a flat, even Lords pitch and lots of runs was so successful yesterday, I'll make another:

Today England will get bowled out for circa 120 and Australia will make something like 330 in their next innings. England will fare better in their next innings with someone, prolly Strauss, making a century but will end up as plucky losers early on in the fourth day.

Barbarossa
07-22-2005, 10:29 AM
England all out for 155. Which under the circumstances is pretty respectable!!

Great last wicket stand of 33 by Harmison and Jones. :)

England need at least a couple of wickets before tea if they're going to have a chance in this game.

Harmisons due a few and he's just been brought back to the attack. I think captain Michael Vaughan has just pulled the ineffectual Hoggard off.

Maybe that will invigorate him :lookaroun

177-3.

According to the commentators, the pitch has evened out and the bounce is far more regular. So no more freak balls like the ones that got Vaughan and Flintoff out yesterday.

Bad news for England :(

England 15 for no wicket. I still say Strauss is due a big score, hopefully we'll make a game of it.

Adster

Vaughan scored almost that many on his own against you lot last time. It was our bowlers that were shite in the last Ashes series. I didn't think that England would struggle for runs.

Looks like it's the other way around this time but perhaps the batsmen are still in one-day mode. Teh Aussies too, the run-rate was ridiculously high for a test.

Adster
07-25-2005, 10:19 PM
Australia always score runs that fast in tests pretty much against everyteam they get about 350 to 380 in a day!!

yeah your right Vaughn was getting lots of runs back then maybe that was just a bad wicket?? Vaughn is out of form since he became captaion

at least Peterson is a good thing for you he came up good

Second Test at Edgbaston :01:

England 132-1 at lunch :01:

Glenn McGrath got injured in the warm up :01:

Okay, that last one is a bit harsh but I think England need all the help they can get, teh Aussies have seemed really confident all week and their bowlers had done well in the warm up matches.

Trescothick badly needs a century now (77 no) he is such a confidence player and this could set him up for the whole series. Or at least until McGrath gets un-inured :ermm:

Having said that, on paper Vaughan (1 no) prolly needs a big score more then Tresco but the England Captain is much more mentally resiliant.

manker
08-05-2005, 09:14 AM
With McGrath out of the equation this is how it is:

Aussie Batsmen > England Batsmen.

England Bowlers > Aussie Bowlers.

Kasprowicz is ordinary, Lee is very fast but a bit shit unless the pitch helps him - he had 5 sixes hit off his bowling yesterday, Jason Gillespie looks shot to bits and the other bowler, Tait, was over here a couple of years ago and got smashed out of county cricket.

Only the spinners are excellent - and you can only play one since we're never going to prepare a spinner's wicket.

The sides are now basically equal. I think this test will be a draw but England will win the next at Old Trafford.

Adster
08-05-2005, 10:34 AM

There's no way this Aussie attack is going to bowl England out for less than 200 on this pitch.

Btw, England don't 'normally' get 407 against Australia. I heard on the TV last night that it's their highest total against them for 37 years or something.

So given that we've played on lots of flat tracks in that time, the high score is either because the England Batsmen are much better or because the Australia bowling attack isn't that good.

Prolly a bit of both but mainly because, Warne aside, your bowlers suck :P

manker
08-06-2005, 12:08 PM
Don't know about Butcher - or care since he's shite - but Thorpe has definitely retired.

I don't think they'll drop Jones. He's a far better batsman than Read and his keeping skills are adequate. As for Bell ... he should be dropped, he's failed 4 times now and looks completely out of his depth. A replacement should be found.

It's a pity Thorpe has retired as he would fit the bill nicely and would play as a wonderful foil to either Pietersen or Flintoff.

Yeah, Collingwood would be the best bet. He bowls a bit and has scoerd three centuries in his last four county innings for Durham. Plus he had a good record in the limited over matches.

Butcher has one or two good scores against the Aussies but is getting pretty old now and he only averages about 32 in test cricket. I don't rate him. I don't rate Key either.

Unless they're prepared to give Collingwood a chance, I'd stick with Bell - he's obviously talented but he's not got enough experience with the five day game to be thrown in agianst the Aussies.

aust were 0-50 and willis took 8 wickets was incrediable remember reading about that and seeing some of it

the india game a few years ago too with teh famous Laxmon and dravid innings where they where india got bowled out for about 150 then aust got 400

india then 2 for 20 Tendulker out?? there gone!!!!

The Aussies have to score something like 282 to win. Not bad considering what went before today.

What a (last) ball from Harmison, to take Clarke.

That makes such a difference to the psychology overnight.

l'm still tipping Australia though, just to put the mockers on them.

Definitely a four day game, this will be over in the first session tomorrow.

This thread is teh jinx :angry:Each time I post in this thread, England so something stupid - like drop a catch or whatever.

I had to leave just then to give my sister a lift and heard the last wicket fall on Five-Live. That prolly wouldn't have happened if I was in here talking to Adster and JP :01:

The title of this thread is completely apt (if it was spelled correctly  ) -- what a fantastic 3 and a bit days of cricket. Maybe the most exciting test I've ever seen, certainly involving England.

Unlucky Australia, you made England work so hard for the win. It was a pleasure to watch.

I had to leave just then to give my sister a lift ....

Why, was she depressed.

I can see how you absenting yourself would give her the lift she needed. :naughty:

Pity you missed the end of t'test tho' it was ace, cool, hip and funky.

Pity you missed the end of t'test tho' it was ace, cool, hip and funky. She was in a rather tricky situation involving sweets and a high shelf. I just had to assist.

I'm not worried about missing the final wicket - if I was watching, we would have lost, I expect.

It's all about me

A really outstanding Test.

A real movie moment for Jones the Glove. You can just imagine the close up in slo mo as he leaps to make the catch that will either win or lose the game.

Doesn't get much closer than that. Will McGrath be back for the next one?

So your sister was depressed, due to her storage having taken drugs, causing you to leave the room, missing the end of the best test match for an age, to cheer her up.

What a complex life you lead.

Will McGrath be back for the next one?I really, really hope not.

I think he is the difference between the teams. We wouldn't have won if he'd been playing in this test. Without a doubt.

Normally I try to be magnanimous about injured opposition players, because it's rather churlish not to be, but on this occasion I'm justifying it to myself by thinking that the games will be much more competitive if he's not in their team.

Mcgrath will not be playing in the 3rd test and is in doubt for the next 2

but people who say cricket is boring watch that last 2 hrs today it was great chewing nails heart thumping I actully walked out to the lounge room to say to my dad 3 runs to get where got it one I walked back in my room and seen that great ball and catch and that was that

I said you wouldn't beleive it england just won by 2 runs!

that 10th wicket partnership by flintoff and jones turned it around .... well the game had so many turnarounds!!

btw Stuart McGill im pretty sure will come in for Kasper for the next test 2 spinners for old traford england will be in deep trouble in that game!

also why sint james anderson in the england team?? he was awsome against australia in teh ODIs hes better then hoggard IMO

Looks like Brett Lee is out of the third test too. With a knee infection ... .

Altho', on the face of it, this could be good news for England, it means that Australia will definitely play with two spinners at Old Trafford (imo). MacGill is a world class spinner who would have a hundred caps for any other country.

Brett Lee had a good last half to the Edgbaston test but I don't think Australia will suffer too much if he doesn't play.
