I posted this a while back in the music thread but I thought I'd post it here (in the lounge) to see if anyone else was interested.

Audioscrobbler:


Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations.

Basically it builds a profile of your music tastes. Here's mine (http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/Withcheese/). It's fairly useless really but oddly compelling.

You just need the relevant plug-in from here: http://www.audioscrobbler.com/download.php#Winamp

The register an account, input your username into the plug-in on your player and you're all set.

You can join some fellow FST'ers here (http://www.audioscrobbler.com/group/Geppers) so that each week a joint chart is compiled. Everyone is welcome to join our group.

Note: If you have problems getting it installed I can try and help if you PM me.

Every Sunday it updates the FST group chart. That is usually when it will update your most played artists and tracks, but sometimes it does it randomly. Sometimes it is a bit laggy but it gets there in the end.

It's been unable to connect for a while (13 songs cached), so I'm wondering does that happen a lot and is there a way to check the server status, like on SS?

Where are you getting this "Handshake" message? I installed iTunes ('cos I have never used it myself) and I can get Audioscrobbler installed and active but not updating. I haven't seen the "Handshake" message yet though...

We've had an increasing amount of unexplainable database issues recently, and the only way we can reduce the impact of such failures is to cluster our servers. To this end, we are working on adding a second machine to profile cluster 2 over the next few days.

In short: some profiles will be inaccessible or slow to update over the next few days. No data should be lost.

I believe it is your first theory. The results will be a bit screwy because of all the downtime and whatnot but hopefully next weeks charts will be a bit better.

I think some people might need to get their plug-ins working properly as well. And some songs won't submit if your tags are poorly done...

yeah i noticed, a few of my songs that were grabbing just as a song and not as part of an album had to be retagged, but that was easly done in Winamp by altering the Artists tab.

It's worth experimenting with the program because it makes renaming files so much easier. I tried using winamp for my brother's renaming but had to download Tag & Rename in the end because Winamp's editor just doesn't have the features T&R has.

I noticed yours wasn't showing any tracks played. What media player are you using?

It's worth checking your firewall's permissions in case you have blocked your media-player in the past from transmitting data.

I’m using Winamp 5. something. I have Norton Internet Security as my firewall and I had Winamp checked to automatically configure, but I changed it to permit. I hope that helps.

I’m using Winamp 5. something. I have Norton Internet Security as my firewall and I had Winamp checked to automatically configure, but I changed it to permit. I hope that helps.

Oops, missed this one sorry.

Open up winamp and click on OPTIONS at the top and go to PREFERENCES. (Or right click on the top and choose the same menus)

On the menu that comes up choose MEDIA LIBRARY:

Double click on the Audio-scrobbler plug-in on the left and you should be able to change your settings. Basically you just need to make sure your username for Audioscrobbler is in there and the password.

If this doesn't work try changing your password at Audioscrobbler, restarting winamp and changing it on the options there and then restart winamp again.

I'll have a few more ideas tomorrow (when I sober up) if that doesn't work. :D

A bit of a strange happening here this week... No, you haven't all listened to your favourite tracks 2147483647 times... A small "hiccup" seems to have occurred in the generation of the charts, and so it's all gone a bit Pete Tong.
Have no fear, your single plays of those tracks you wanted to keep a secret will soon disappear again as the problem is being fixed, and the charts will be regenerated.
Posting about this other than in this official thread will result in very unhappy moderators, and you will be frowned upon, you have been warned ;)

There's that and the fact their server's fuxx0red again.

A tag is information embedded in your mp3, with separate entries for artist, album, name of the song and so forth.

I think you can check the tag info with xp, if you have any, on the songs you want to submit, try right clicking and selecting properties, you should be able to see the info there through one of the tabs (you may need to click a button that says "advanced" somewhere).

If you don't have any tag info there are a few freebie tag editors out there, and it should be fairly easy to mass tag your stuff.

I think I used to use this (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html) (haven't really needed to fix anything lately), but I think spd has something better :unsure:

If the tags are fooked - a lot of mine are, then they still get submitted but AS doesn't count them, it makes no difference to the next song getting submitted and logged.

Yup, but since the plugin says it can't read the tag...:unsure:

It should be able to even if the plugin isn't submitting.

Is it possible to have them uploaded without tags? I removed all my tags because I prefer Winamp to load up my music by filename as they're sorted out alphabetically, with artist, album, album number, title so I can listen to older albums and scroll down for newer stuff if you get what I'm saying.

Also, is there any good places to get sigs for this to work? Don't worry about webspace I can cover that area, but I need a cool image ;)
