about one in five of downloads i get contain a virus, i tried setting options to filter out potential files but then i get almost no search results, people i know dont appear to have this problem :(

Test for what?

Leave out the filtering-for-potential-viruses. Make sure you have a good and updated antivirus software. If it catches the infected file, no worries. It's doing its job. What kind of files are you downloading? Certain types are more virus-prone.
