PC become slow when using External USB HDD

My specs:

Abit KV7
AMD Barton 2500
512mb ram kingston
40gb ATA (Primary, WinXP isntalled)
80gb SATA

Windows XP SP2

USB device: A1Pro external case / toshiba 40gb

I dont know exactly why this happens. The PC detected the USB device but when I start to copy files from this device into PC, the PC will become slow. If I preview a file like AVI or Zip files (or open directly) inside the external hdd, it will become freaking slower. Even to open Taskman will take times.

Okay, the device working fine on other pc. I do have another PC. Actually, the device working fine too before in this Abit KV7 pc. But few months ago I reformatted it and install the WinXP back. Just now I tried and it become like this.

I was thinking is this something related to BIOS? Because I did change UDMA mode for my IDE ATA HDD to disable it since it will not working fine with my SATA HDD.

I don't think it's a BIOS issue (at least not the one you're talking about) since your data is being accessed through USB and really doesn't go anywhere near your IDE port.
You might check in BIOS to confirm your USB 2.0 support is enabled.....

Ok, I will check that. Well, my other device, like the USB thumb drive is working fine but that one is usb 1.1.

Your jump drive is inherently faster because it's not mechanical.

hmm... USB 2.0 in BIOS already enabled. I even try-n-error with Virtual Memory but the problem still insists. :(

well USB is a very CPU consuming standard

do you have the same problem with other USB devices?

if your external HDD allows a different connection method, try that....... still the same problem?

I only use my wireless mouse and pad for usb. as well as my printer but i didnt switch on the printer. :(

Is it defined in Device Manager as a USB2.0 controller? The definitions differ, but they usually include the word Enhanced.

And if you've got both Normal (USB1.1) and Enhanced controllers, are you certain you've plugged it into the correct port?

I think I've tried all the ports. I will check more then.

I was thinking that this would be software problems but I dont know. 'Cause, i can use the drive before. But then who knows? :( I really dont know what happens.
