Mozilla has just updated the Firefox development roadmap to reflect a decision on the next major release of the popular open-source browser. The non-profit foundation has decided to increase the version number of the next major release to 1.5 from 1.1, reflecting the sheer number of bug fixes and features that have been worked into the next version of the browser. Mozilla still plans to ship the next version of Firefox (now Firefox 1.5: "Deer Park") around September of this year.

Not sure if I like the jump in number meself. Just seems too much like version number inflation.

Course there is a lot of changes between 1.0 and the next major version - There was a lot of changes to each 0.* version between 0.1 and 1.0 as well.

Case of Marketing deciding the number instead of the technical guys, perhaps?

I reckon they should scrap 1.5 and go straight onto version 7000 that would be l33t.

I think its put off for now .

Quote :he next version of Firefox has been delayed for a few months, the Mozilla Foundation confirmed Thursday.

Earlier Mozilla stated on its Web site that the next major release of Firefox, called version 1.1, would be released in July. But on Wednesday, lead Firefox engineer Ben Goodger updated the group's road map to indicate that the next major release would now not be until after August.

I'm confused with the number sysyem too .

The next release will now be called Firefox 1.5 as it includes more features than initially planned, Nitot said. "What we have been doing is better than initially planned, so instead of calling it 1.1, we think it deserves the name of 1.5.
