I would get VLC media player (found at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) plays just about anything on just about anything.

I use to use BS Player but then I switched to VLC. No problems, its the best.

VLC is a great player - no doubt about it, but there are a few codecs that I recommend for general use: Divx 3.1, Xvid, Elecard Mpeg-2. With codecs, the fewer you install, the better. Those large codec packs can cause problems sometimes because codecs can conflict with one another. I would also avoid codec packs with the ffshow codecs.
