• Sony Confirms PlayStation 3 Successor Is In Development

When Sony announced that they would be increasing research and development costs speculation was high as to where the money was going. In a conference call made to investors to clarify the spending, Sony's executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato has confirmed that the company is at work on the successor to the PlayStation 3.

Clarifying the increased expenditure Kato stated that:

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."

Earlier this year Kaz Hirai, head of Sony Computer Entertainment, dismissed claims of a PlayStation 4 appearing in the near-future stating that Sony's 10 year projected lifespan for the PS3 wasn't "even at the half-way point".

Nintendo's next home console is to be formally unveiled at E3 2011. Speculation is also high that Microsoft will be unveiling an Xbox 360 successor at the event.

Can't wait to see what price point the PS4 is going to launch at. I wouldn't be surprised at around the $800 mark.

Well, this article http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...m-hardware.ars says that
"The real news is that Sony may be focusing on using less-expensive components that can be ordered in larger quantities at a lower price. When you're trying to launch a system with as much new tech as the PlayStation 3, you're spending a lot of money on components, and you may be suffering from low yields as the high-end components are mass produced.
By using mature, off-the-shelf parts, Sony could cut costs and lower the price of the system, moves that would likely have little impact on the system's performance."

MS did that when they launched the 360 and that went well for them....

Skimp on hardware and you're fucked. The PS3 was the perfect BD player for most.

Impact little on the system's performance? Who's perspective is this from? An average console gamer or a PC gamer?

Apple knows damn well they can't compete in the console market. Pity, because I would love to see them lauch a gaming console to fail miserably.

      lol.

By the way, for those of you who say that each console has their prons and cons, let me say it was already proven that Sony has a better CPU than xbox 360, but xbox 360 has a better gpu. It would simply be impossible to make a game for Xbox 360 that has the graphics that Uncharted 2 has. PS3's CPU more than makes up for the weaknesses that PS3's GPU has.

And? Like I said, each console has their own pro's and con's. I really don't get what your point was other than to spout out some fanboyism drivel about a games graphics.

If the way you measure a console's worth is by how pretty of a game can be made on it, then you belong on the System Wars board over at Gamespot. You'll fit right in over there with the rest of the children that constantly compare which game that gets released on both the ps3/360 is prettier.
