• EA Claims Valve Kicked Crysis 2 Off Steam Instead

Yesterday, news broke that Crysis 2 had been pulled from Steam, supposedly by EA, in order to turn it into an Origin Store exclusive. Today, EA are claiming that far from them yanking the game, it was Valve who kicked the game off their service, for violating Steam's "business terms". Hrmm.

"It's unfortunate that Steam has removed Crysis II from their service. This was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA," reads the official statement from the company. "Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service – many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis II from Steam."

The statement goes on to point out that Crysis 2 is still available online from a number of digital distribution outlets, which would certainly add weight to the theory that it's simply been booted out by Valve - if EA wanted to make it an Origin exclusive they wouldn't have stopped at the Steam store.

Valve shouldn't have done that imo.

Better chances are that they'll come up with some sort of agreement than that.

I suspect that if Steam did the kicking it was more related to pricing than other services also having it available for download. Its more likely that EA wanted too big a cut of sales and when Steam wouldn't accepted it they had no choice but to remove it. Many games that you can download from Steam are also available from other DLC providers so this doesn't make sense. Without truely explaining what "business terms", its impossible to tell but I would trust Steam before I would trust EA's word. This is just a lot of finger pointing and I would guess Steam will have a comment soon and point their finger next.

afaik, steam kicked them due to breach of contract. EA sales the game thru another DD.

Steam has way too much market power right now and this is the type of stuff you will see until other DD services catch up. I am so glad EA is not using their services right now, but are using other DD options as well as their own.
