• Hackers orders $87k in chickens for Red Rooster

A cocky computer hacker ordered more than $87,000 in chickens to an Australian fast food restaurant after resigning in a flap.

After quitting due to a heated disagreement with his boss at Red Rooster, Scott Evan McCormick sought revenge by accessing the business' stock-ordering system remotely.

The 23-year-old ordered A$67,732.73 (NZ$87,672.10) of "stock" - chickens - from five separate suppliers to be delivered to the franchise.

An alert supplier noticed the unusually large amount and contacted Red Rooster at Indooroopilly which cancelled the order before it was delivered.

    The owner then called police.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard McCormick, 23, had worked at the store for 18 months but left after a disagreement.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Brad Dick said the stunt was more than just a "harmless prank".

"It was only by the alertness on the part of the supplier that no actual detriment was caused," Snr Cnst Dick said.

McCormick, who had no prior history, pleaded guilty to using a restricted computer without consent to cause or intend to cause detriment, damage or gain.

The Collingwood Park resident was ordered to perform 150 hours of unpaid community service.

    No conviction was recorded.

Defence lawyer Clark Bushnell said his client had an argument with the owner over what he believed were safety issues.

"Hopefully this is a singular aberration in his life," he said.

"You can see he's got red hair; maybe it's a function of that."

Mr Bushnell saidMcCormick accessed the orders using Red Rooster's website and password.

Red Rooster could not be reached for comment.

Why is he called a hacker?? All he did was remotely login using what seems like valid credentials. By that account, I hack my own computer every time I use logmein!

I used to do similar things in the old days with something called a phone but then I grew up and realized that not only was I needlessly hurting other people but I was also basically an idiot.
Hopefully similar realization will come to our current crop of "rebels".

So true, the real meaning of "hacker" left a long time ago It's a shame that what people don't know or understand they rather destroy it or make it a negative thing.

to me a hacker well always be someone who looks but never changes things, someone who does things to see if they can.

      megabytme,
You seem to be overlooking an even more basic fact:
He's ginger therefore he IS the problem.

      PS,
Direct all hateful comments to Eric Cartman. He oversees these kind of issues.

Hacking is simply a skill someone can have and is not the only thing he can be. A lockpicker does not have to be thief, in fact a lot of police officer might have this skill. Yet when we thing lockpicker we quickly think thief, same with hackers. A hacker can simply gain access to the systems, the thief takes stuff from the system. The thief can also be an hacker. A hacker however does not have to a thief.

Someone who opens an unlocked door doesn't have to be a lockpick.

If I were to find someone roaming around in my house, or even my shed, I would want them arrested- or shot. Breaking in, or wandering in (in the case of an unlocked door) does not make someone "harmless". The fact that they came in, where they were uninvited, makes them a threat. So what if they have not stolen, or harmed anyone yet?

      You're getting off topic.
If the thief or otherwise uninvited guest entered your house using keys, would you call them a lock picker?
