• Sony: New Video Players Should Be Internet Connected to Beat Pirates

The Anti-Piracy and Content Protection Summit in Los Angeles had a number of interesting speakers several week ago. Stephens has revealed his wish-list for future 4K content protection with Sony just confirming that its new 4K player will debut in weeks. The Sony CTO says that 4K players should have an Internet connection in order authenticate each video playback, in addition to watermarking files with the identity of the user.

Earlier this year, Sony declared its new FMP-X1 4K radical HD Media Player in preparation for transportation the best quality video obtainable into homes round the world. 4K video can bring a resolution of 3840 × 2160 to the market, with the 4K referencing the almost-4000 constituent horizontal resolution.

Just in the week Sony confirmed that its new device, that is simply compatible with Sony’s own 4K TVs, are going to be inward in homes from Gregorian calendar month fifteenth . Priced at $699, the player would force activation via the 4KActivation.com web site.

Sony conjointly named its new on-line 4K content distribution service that is owing to launch later within the year. Video Unlimited 4K can provide movies and television shows for direct transfer to its 4K player.

How the studios shall shield their 4K content from piracy going forward has not been publically printed. However, throughout last week’s Anti-Piracy and Content Protection Summit in la, Sony footage CTO Herbert Spencer Stephens gave a presentation including his company’s wish-list for 4K DRM.

Bill Rosenblatt, UN agency spoke at the summit for his company GiantSteps Media, notes that Stephens represented the introduction of 4K as a chance to begin with a contemporary anti-piracy style. This, beside Sony’s “wish-list”, suggests that the ultimate approach is nevertheless to be in agreement.

Nevertheless, at this stage Sony seems to be clear on its DRM needs. though fairly sure, they aren’t attending to win them several fans.

After the disreputable cracking of HDCP, Sony is backing HDCP two.2 (spec here, pdf) to safeguard the digital outputs of its devices from unauthorized video capture. HDCP 2.2 conjointly includes a ‘localization‘ feature, that limits the space over that Associate in Nursing HDCP player can feed content to a receiver like a TV. this could stop individuals taking part in HDCP-protected content over the net.

Next, Sony wants every video title to be unique, meaning that the cracking of one segment of content doesn’t open up the floodgates to everything else. The company additionally wants video playback to round place in a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), ensuring that sensitive data is processed and protected in a secure manner while allowing software upgrades.

And now the intrusive stuff. Sony says it wants 4K content to be watermarked all over the identity of the equipment or user who downloaded it, meaning that should the above countermeasures become cracked at some point, it will be possible to trace content back to its original owner. It won’t certainly follow that those individuals are obligated for any ‘leak’ but they could often associated with that content if it should.

Of particular use given all the fuss over Xbox One’s past requirement to be attached to the Internet on a daily basis (and Sony’s response of needing no such thing for PS4), is Sony’s final wish-list item for 4K. If the company has its way, all 4K players will need to verify themselves online before each and every playback. This will enable content providers to identify both unauthorized content and hacked players. However, if you are a legitimate customer with no Internet connection – permanently or temporarily – content will not play on your 4K device.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that content providers are viewing the Internet as a means to remain in constant contact with ‘their’ hardware and content wherever it may be. Going forward that will provide an unprecedented level of control. At least, that’s the plan.

I still HATE Sony for disabling the use of Linux on the machine I paid for. I do not trust these pricks, and wish them catastrophic failure with this and everything they touch.

Don't sit on the fence, tell us what you're really thinking
Makes you wonder if they're secretly planning stuff with the PS4.

All large corporations tend to be evil but I think the question you should really be asking yourself is if you hate fences and the guy next door is forced to put up a fence (which you hate) to keep out pests. Is the guy to blame for the fence being there or are the pests to blame?

Governments, large institutions and corporations all want to control. They wish to dominate. They need to prove that they hold the reins to humanity, and they are not afraid to yank them.

The simple fact is that ever since the digital age took off big time, some time back in the 80's, they have been inventing newer and cheaper ways to monitor us, and control us.

They can catch us speeding using remote cameras which can also detect if we have a tax disk. They can monitor us as we go from shop to shop. They listen to our telephone conversations. They watch us with our web cams. They have our Biometrics stored so they can watch us come and go.

      Where will it end?

DNA recording from birth? Microchip implant at birth? Retinal data? Urine Biometrics (this one is interesting, as they will be able to trace our movements based on where we take a piss)?

So, as processors become even faster and more powerful, those in charge are coming us with new and novel ways to monitor us using this technology.

The real scary part is that we are rapidly heading towards a society whereby computers will control our daily chores. In fact, Star Trek, The Next Generation Borgs are not too far in the distant future, where humanity will be at the beck and call of computers supposedly being run for those privileged few who will still have their own will power.

In fact, regardless whether intellectual property can or cannot be owned, there are those who are hell bent on protecting something that should be public domain. Greed will drive us to the brink of slavery again.

My neighbor is unlikely to build a fence that is going to track my every movement, now isn't he?

To be fair though that's only because you're very boring and he doesn't see that there's anything in it for him.

Very true. Unfortunately, we are the authors of our own prisons. We willingly enjoy the chains of our slavery.
The chain links come in the form of our cell phones, TV's, computers, internet and wifi, slipping in under the guise of comfort, entertainment and necessity. Not all of us can afford to, nor do most of us want to... but until we move towards a self-sufficient off the grid mentality, we continue to be dependant on the system that enslaves us.

Governments are just the instrument of a greater evil. The important thing to remember is that while we are being distracted by Miley Cyrus, the Denver Broncos, and all things sparkly and pretty, Corporations that give us these wonderful newer, faster, stronger technologies, are also putting the final touches on total control of our food, water, and shelter. And yet, most people want big brother... slaves to the calendar, slaves to their favourite teams, slaves to their
BB cues and white picket fences...

This is fine. I'll just use my PC, or if I really want it on an HDTV, my HTPC. Like hell I'm going to buy their shit media player if they pull this shit.

Also if they think I'm going to pay extra money for some bullshit 4k resolution video when I can just get it at 1080p from netflix (assuming we're talking about staying legal here), they're delusional.

my tv has All-Share, I can just dl a HD 3D movie and put it on a usb flash drive then pop it in the usb port on the tv and watch my movies that way. I almost never use my PS3 any more, it just sits next to my direct tv box collecting dust.

You know, I've had a Sony player for several years because it supports DLNA streaming from my network server. No problems there. The other day, I tried to connect it up to my wife's Amazon Prime account and the stream was really bad - low resolution - and this is on a service we paid for. Made my decision right there and ordered an android tv box on Prime Day. Haven't turned the Sony on since then.
