• Man Broadcasts His Suicide Using a File-Sharing Site

Although this news is not necessarily related to file sharing and social networking in the way we’re used to, it does have a rather macabre connection to these two, one we couldn’t ignore and had to report.
After advertising his own suicide on an online forum, a young Swedish man turned his death into a online social event by hanging himself in a live web broadcast, The Local reports.
21 year-old Marcus Jannes had made his intentions known through a post at 11:51 a.m. local time. He also provided potential morbid voyeurs with a link and a password to a file-sharing site so they could watch him carrying out the terrible plan live.
In a few words Jannes suggested what was perhaps the main reason for his death wish. At 1.02pm local time he wrote: "Have Asperger syndrome / high-functioning autism. Am overly vulnerable (emotionally) … Have really poor social skills, which make me a somewhat lonely person."
Some minutes later the young man appeared on camera wearing a Nike "Just Do It" t-shirt and wrote: "alright let’s do it." Unfortunately, police were alerted too late, at 1:44 p.m when nothing could be done anymore to save Jannes.
Expressen newspaper quoted police spokeswoman Lotta Thyni: "Police performed CPR until the ambulance arrived, but his life could not be saved. We can only regret that people who knew that he planned to kill himself did not act to save his life."

This is not the first case of this kind – similar "cyber suicides" have been reported in Japan and Britain and it’s awfully sad how lack of real sociability and communication between people can lead to this surrogate for interaction in a last desperate attempt to reach other fellow beings and with nothing to share but pointlessly their own death for a few seconds. People’s lives and reality altogether are sometimes virtualized till the point where one single click can satisfy your need for adrenaline in a violent video-game or the morbid curiosity for a real death desensitized by the screen of a computer.

Poor kid, it's sad that he only had the internet to turn to. All he probably needed was someone to smile at him.

It makes me mad to think of all those lurkers who could have rung the police early enough to make a difference, but didn't because they wanted to witness someone taking their own life.

Or did they think he didn't have the bottle to do it.

At 11.51am, Jannes started a new thread on the forum, writing that he had taken painkillers several minutes earlier and would broadcast his suicide live on a webcam. He also provided an FTP link with login information to access the photos of the event.
I do not like that this is being inaccurately tied to "a file sharing site". It's sad that the guy had no other group of peers, but file-sharing does not deserve to take a black eye on this, either.

Makes me mad too but I think unless someone knew exactly who this guy was and where he lived, they probably couldn't get to him quick enough, I am thinking. It is sad, very sad, for someone to have to reach a point where the only way to get any relief for the immense pain they are going through, is suicide.

Well, someone must have known where he lived, because it states...

"Police performed CPR until the ambulance arrived, but his life could not be saved. We can only regret that people who knew that he planned to kill himself did not act to save his life."

...so, either his immediate neighbours realised something was wrong, or someone on-line knew his whereabouts, otherwise the police would have stated that they arrived to find a dead body. No one in their right mind performs CPR on a cold corpse.

wonder how many viewers where there? or there was ever a hint that family members could pick up on. Sad but makes you wonder did he truly want to die?
Seems he just wanted help and didn't know where or who to turn too

@TheFoX - When he posted the IP to his FTP,only then could people call 112 (911), think it took about 15min from the first call for the police to arrive,

@Brilman - He had posted stuff on his Facebook days/weeks behore and hinted that....

      @ninja666...

15 minutes for the Police to arrive? They'd be better off calling a Pizza Palour, or a Kebeb shop. I get my kebabs delivered in half the time. Or maybe the cops stopped off for doughnuts first.

With all the crazy shit that gets posted on the Internet, it's pretty easy to see why nobody took him seriously until it was too late. If someone posted on here that they were going to kill themself would you take it seriously? I wouldn't.

Actually, if Detale posted he was going to commit suicide, I think half of the members here would watch in anticipation. In fact, I think it would probably be broadcast live around the world, including fireworks displays to mark the end of life.

Do any of you people suffer from the conditions that this kid had? Do you know what he was going through? Yes, he was only 21 and probably could have undergone counseling and it might have taken years, if not decades, for him to be able to cope. So he chose the alternative, and I for one will defend his right to do so because I can partially relate. For the police rep to say "we can only regret that no one...acted to save his life" is completely so politically correct that it is sickening. Stop making judgments on others until you are able to relate and see their life for what it is - their life.

Yes, it is sad and I still will not ever watch this or any of the other horrible acts that have been posted (i.e. beheadings). Don't blame the internet or any other "things" for this.
