• Panorama: quarter of children have looked at pornography in last year

It showed that one in eight of young people aged between nine and 16 have received messages of a sexual nature while surfing online or through their mobile phones.

In addition, more than half – 52 per cent – go online when they are in their bedrooms on in a room alone, making it hard for parents to monitor what they are doing.

The findings come from a study carried out by Professor Sonia Livingstone into the UK aspect of a European wide survey into children’s habits on the internet and other media.

They are included in a BBC Panorama documentary entitled Too Much Too Young, presented by newsreader Sophie Raworth.

Miss Raworth was inspired to investigate the phenomenon after watching a pop music video of acts such as Girls Aloud and the Saturdays with her six-year-old daughter, Ella.

“Within minutes I felt deeply uncomfortable,” she said. “What I saw were heavily made up girls with huge false eyelashes, in really skimpy clothes with lots of cleavage showing off their sexy dance moves.
“My gut reaction was to switch it off.
“I couldn't cope with my kids being bombarded with those images at such a young age and I had no idea what impression it would leave on them.”
According to the research, 24 per cent of nine to 16-year-olds have seen some form of pornography in the last year – through the internet, television, magazines or DVDs.
Of those, 41 per cent of parents believed that their children had not seen any such images.
Prof Livingstone said there was cause for concern about the amount of time children spent online and what they do while on the internet.
“I think there’s a lot of experimentation going on,” she said. “I think a lot of that is about sharing experiences, being in touch, seeing if other people are living the life that you are.
“Within that there is clearly a lot of flirtation and some degree of sexual experimentation.”

Absurd article trying to attack the internet. I guess that the biggest number is between the 13-16 year old. You now when most people start to become interested in this subject...it is called puperty....you know has been around for 100s of years!. Meaning that hardly any 9-12 year old have actually been seeing porn.

with the number of teenage pregnancies on the rise I'd rather they be looking on the internet for porn than actually doing it lol

Offended by a Girls Aloud music video? What would she say about Girls Gone Wild, Suicide Girls, Shemales on Girls, Exploited College Girls, Nude Wrestling Girls or Bi Teen Girls?
