Major File-Sharing Sites Go Dark To Protest Anti-Download Law
In recent times, Spanish courts have ruled repeatedly that subject to some fairly minor conditions, operating a file-sharing site falls within the boundaries of the law.
However, as shown by diplomatic cables recently leaked by Wikileaks, under pressure from the United States, the Spanish Government proposed new legislation to close loopholes and provide sweeping new anti-filesharing powers.

The MPAA and their colleagues in The Netherlands appear to have shut down more than two dozen BitTorrent, Usenet and other file-sharing sites today. Accused of linking to movies, music, TV shows and games, at least one domain appears to be redirecting to the website of Dutch anti-piracy outfit, BREIN.

It appears that the Dutch Usenet community FTD has survived their legal battle with BREIN - but not without its fair share of wounds. A Dutch Court of appeals has ruled that FTD isn't guilty of copyright infringement, but it does promote illegal uploading. What this means is that FTD survives, but but its community software that helps people find Usenet content will have to be altered significantly.
