I can't understand European accents
:schnauz:
I've been covering a different shift at work and there's this guy from SW England and I can't understand half of what he says. It's hard b/c he pronounces all of his "th" sounds as an "f". Things like that.
Also, I was watching Trainspotting the other day and I had to put the subtitles on just to understand it.
Would you have an equally hard time understanding me (I'm from Texas) if I were there?

Re: I can't understand European accents
Nil responses eh? Perhaps they cannot understand my southern lingo.
Re: I can't understand European accents
It's not the accents I have trouble with, it's the slang.
Re: I can't understand European accents
And they mix it up all the time. That bisquits/cookies thing always gets me.
Re: I can't understand European accents
I do have a bit of problem understanding Deep South and 'hood' type accents sometimes (when watching Gerry Springer type shows), but I also have trouble understanding strong Geordie (Rat Faced) and Scottish (JPaul) accents....and don't get me started on the Scousers (Liverpool).
Of course, I speak beautifully clearly, never use slang or owt me duck!
Re: I can't understand European accents
i can't fecking stand Europeans and their accents, actually i don't really understand their language either, or their fecking currency
Re: I can't understand European accents
Tis all an act we put on to fool Johnny Foreigner,we are bloody awful at speaking the queens english, the people who speak english the best are foreigners who have learned english and people from the some parts of Scotland,Trainspotting was set in Glasgow I think and they are hard to understand at the best of times, watch Snatch and try and figure out what they are saying:)
Good luck squire
Re: I can't understand European accents
it would be a lot easier if America, France and other third world countries spoke English instead of "there own extra special version of it" :ermm:

The Westcountry accent is my least favourite accent, everyone down here sounds like an idiot. The "Janner" accent in Plymouth is even worse:
"I's goin down Plymcos to gets me Lotteries, then we's going Millenniums"
"Ere bey! You startin! I'm gonna ave ya, ya Goff twat."
"Reet bey. Are got escort wiv fat wheel an at."
Janners love putting an 'S' on the end of inappropriate words...
Personally I don't have a problem understanding American accents (apart from laughing at how silly you all sound in real life), perhaps that is to do with the fact that we have a heavy satuaration of American television and films in this country?
