Ipod question.

I reformatted my computer, and then I realized that most of my music library was gone. So after I installed itunes I realized that when the ipod is plugged in, it updates itself to whats on itunes. If most of the songs on my ipod, are not on my itunes, will the songs get deleted on the ipod?
