eplorer crashes on startup

hi there,wonder if anyone can help me this problem.
it may be a problem that cannot be solved,idont know as i'm a novice.
ever time i turn on my NEW pc the desktop crashes and i can do nothing,so i have to bring up the task manager and end task for explorer.exe then enter new task of explorer.exe and enter that,then the pc works fine.
this is genuine windows xp on brand new HP PAVILION MEDIA CENTER EDITION.
if you know of an easy solution to this and an aswer as to why then i would be most greatfull,its a mystery to me ????
