Now, the electro-mechanical components are another story. Your hard-drive could be failing and would certainly give you symptoms such as what you described.
Look at your hard-drive light, listen for the noise. Is it continually "on" (accessing data)during the time it takes to open a program? That's a sign.
If so, back up your data and have it tested at a local PC shop.
Or try another one if possible.
And don't freak out if it is bad, it may still be under warranty. Up until last year, hard-drive mfg. were giving them 3 year warranties. (check the mfg. site)
