Try peerguardian and you could work via proxies.

Limewire is teh debil ! Peerguardian 2 might help a bit though...
I've tried torrents, but for some reason ports won't open properly for me.... i'll give peerguardian a go anyway!

You can always start and use newsgroups. They are perfectly safe and are much faster although if your isp does not provide them you will have to pay for it.
