stopzilla is the best because it knows what windows you want and dont want so it wont block important windows that you need

get the mozilla web browser. it has one built in.
There's a highly effective spam pop-up preventer bundled into the Pro version of ZoneAlarm (not sure about the free version) - You then get great protection from a firewall & a lot of spam killing (e.g. cookies, pop-ups etc)
