If you mean games like mmorpg. I would say Ultima Online. There are many free shards (worlds/servers). Ok WoW have much better graphics, but verrrry limited in comparaison to UO.

Silkroad was horrible. The quests are drawn out and VERY VERY VERY repetitive.

Final Fantasy XI has always been awesome, but I can't pay to play anymore :'(
