It's pretty obvious that they would come down to this price before too long. Toshiba and Walmart are simply leading the market.
The smart move in the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle is to get a large number of units into use. That in turn will drive demand for the media and will turn studios etc towards the winning format.
$100 is clearly a significant milestone, will it be the move that decides the final outcome?
this $100 player is the TOSHIBA HD-A2 and it only goes up to 1080i
not a bad player though. well worth $100

does it upscale regular dvd's to 1080 too?
Yes, but I have never been a fan of upscaling or up-converting SD DVD's.
I get a far better picture playing a SD DVD though my computer to my 43" HDTV then up-converting to 720p or 1080i on my DVD player. granted my DVD player is a standard DVD player with HDMI output. The HD-DVD player may do a better job.
this product (Toshiba HD-A2) is now obsolete. it is now replaced with the Toshiba HD-A3 version.

Which is why Walmart was selling them for $100.
