Keeping it registered is nothing, really.

There's two different charges when it comes to setting up a website.
1) The domain registration.
2) The cost of hosting.
You can avoid #2 by hosting the website on an Internet-connected machine that you own. That's what larger companies, like Yahoo and Microsoft, do.
