When I go to certain websites (crack search engines mostly :rolleyes: )
I get really frustrated with those web installers trying to install some crappy spyware toolbar or something.
XXXToolbar is an infamous one. (Don't install that please!).
Does anyone know how to stop Internet Explorer from popping up these installers?
Has it got something to do with ActiveX? Can I turn this off?
Or is there any software (IE plugin maybe?) to prevent it?

yeah there is
a great little program call No Ads
it works when ever you are on line...
when an annoyin ad or banner poops up, click on the no ads icon (in your little icon bar thing next to your clock) click add to list...
no ads rememebers this list and thwn that advert will never load again, it a bit like mail washer..
because you chose which ads n banners to add to it its totaly personalized to the sites u visit.
and because all the adds n pop ups dont get chance to load up the page you want will load quicker as your not opening crap sites as well
it also means that if your mum walks in n u try to close the site dead wuick you dont get more porn sites poping up n so you dont have 20 sites of dirt oin your screen... ha ha
The web installers arent ad popups. You cant stop them with a ad blocking program.

Go to Internet Explorer options and set all ActiveX related security settings on 'prompt'. All unsafe and unsigned ones should be on 'disable'.
Ah great, thanks Paul, I misinterpreted those settings as advanced so I was looking in the wrong tab :)
It turned out I had to add the sites in question to the "Restricted Sites" in IE.
Works flawlessly now!
