Nah, looks like the old drive is comprehensively knackered to the max.

XP makes that ding dong sound when I put the USB in and the drive tries to power up but then it just dies again so XP doesn't recognise it as another drive.

Which means I can't install Spinrite onto the drive so it can do it's thang, like. Well and truly banjaxed. Time to give up, I think.
