Scottish/Irish tradition question

Was just wondering if anyone know where the tradition of putting silver in a new baby's hand comes from?

My neighbour said it's an old Irish tradition but I can't seem to find anything online regarding it. Anyone have a clue?:unsure:

It's so they don't lose the natural pikey-reflex.

My guess would be money-grubbing parents.

As in, "Yes, certainly we'll save it for his/her future".

Maybe they'll send them out for werewolves later.

Apparently it's an old Jewish tradition. Something to do with trading the baby for money to acknowledge a gift from God has been received :)
