steve martin's the first that springs to mind
In chronological order, in my lifetime:
1-Lenny Bruce
2-Jonathan Winters
3-George Carlin (I didn't forget; while making my decisions earlier, I felt he was a bit too derivative of Lenny Bruce for inclusion on this list. I hereby change my mind.)
4-Richard Pryor
5-Robin Williams
6-Eddie Izzard
All others are pretenders to the throne, which is not to say there aren't a lot of great comedians out there-just that these six, to me, qualify as true geniuses. ;)
EDIT:added George Carlin
Bill Hicks. Rabid poet.
charlie chaplin
definetly the waynes brothers
An excellent list ( I am not familiar with Jonathon Winters work tho') - however I would addQuote:

Tony Hancock. East Cheam's most famous son.
Billy Connoly. The man who put the cnt back in Cntry and Western.
The genius part must surely involve an element of originality ( for his/her time). I think these people displayed it. As well as being feckin' funny.
ad to that list the great charlie chaplin and harold lloydQuote:
