Would be more interesting than the same old

Architect Dietmar Koering of Arphenotype has designed these electricity pylons for a competition to envisage a new power transmission network in Iceland.

Each pylon would be between 17 and 32 metres tall, with the shape of each one varying according to its longitude and latitude.

“A parametric code drives the heights in an continuous gradient, which will be manufactured physically through help of milling machines,” says Koering.

“Once the parameters are set, it is just the location of tower by latitude and longitude that will result in unique towers,” he continues.

The towers would be prefabricated and mounted on concrete foundation.

The project was devised for a competition organised by Icelandic electrical transmission company Landsnet and the Association of Icelandic Architects.

shirley an underground network would be better
Re: Would be more interesting than the same old
If they invented pylons today they would never be allowed
Re: Would be more interesting than the same old
That's a bit philosophical for a Tuesday morning.

It costs too much.;)

maybe for canadians, like.

A thought..
'Coz of all the NIMBY's regarding wind farms, why not stick a windmill on top of each of these bloody pylons going through the countryside anyway carrying the bloody electricity?
The production is then already on the grid too..
/me awaits all the amateur engineers to jump in and crush his brainwave..
Re: Would be more interesting than the same old
That's the beauty of Iceland, not many people = not many nimby's so your evil plan could work RF

Like those helicopter style ones, that are turned upwards?
Those are fairly quiet I hear, so not that terrible for the wild life, or anything. And powerlines sort of hum anyways, so.
Only probs I see is maybe maintenance: you'll spread them out all along the length of the line, and some will be hard to get to. And it'll probably take some trickery with capacitors and whatnot to get an even influx of power if it's tying into the grid.
I dunno about the durability of those pylons or anything, and whether it's feasible, but I like the idea, anyhow.
