When you want to copy a DVD you can put the original in the DVD reader and burn to the DVD writer.

cheers all.
is it very easy to swap the drives as i have not got much idea

Very easy. Just be sure to set the Master/Slave jumper the same on your new drive as the one you remove.
You can see the jumpers near the IDE connector.

depends on which activity you do more:
1) watch and rip DVDs
or
2) burn CD-Rs
whichever one you do more often, keep the drive you use for that so you can save your DVD-RW from a bit of wear & tear.

Do you ever burn cd's over 80 mins?
I was disappointed to find that by sony dvd±rw wouldn't go beyond the 80 minute mark, but my cdrw will burn up to 93 minutes (with the right media) which is necessary for some long cd's.
If you never do it (or your cdrw can't do it) then drop the cdrw, otherwise consider carefully which is more important to you.
