I'd like to get your opinion on which DVD burner would be best for my desktop, that will burn disks that will play on a external DVD player that would hook up to my Dell laptop with a USB cable, if those two items are available. I'm to believe that a DVD disk can hold over 4gb, or about 6 or 7 .avi movies. Thanks

There is a significant quantity of DVD-burners available on the market, priced ~£145, which support DVD+/-R/RW, look out for one that supports DVD-RAM. ;)
Ideally, you would require a standard 4x2.4x16, with decent CD-R/RW speeds. But I've also seen DVD+R/RW speed now being rated at 4x as well. :P
Referring back to the speeds of the CD-R/RW media that are integrated with DVD-burners, speeds are not pleasing. A £23 CD-R/RW-burner can get you speeds of 52x32x56, whilst speeds of a DVD-burner are around 16x10x24. I'd recommend that you have two seperate drives: one fast DVD-ROM/CD-RW combined and a DVD+/-R/RW, seeing as the speeds of the DVD-ROM read-speed on a DVD-writer are not at all satisfactory.
