Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
My apology if this has already been covered in an existing thread.
For several months every time I go to either the Mininova or The Pirate Bay sites I get infected by a Trojan. I use Windows XP Home OS, IE 8 browser, and my virus / spyware protection and firewall is McAfee, and it is up to date. The McAfee software detects and tries to block the infection, but I still end up infected. The virus is the type that tells you your system is infected and provides a link to fix it, and I assume if you follow the link they try to sell you some fake anti-virus software.
In the past I have been creating a new restore point before I go to the sites, and then doing a system restore afterward; however, yesterday the virus changed something to block me from doing this. I had to do a recovery of my entire C drive – a major PITA.
Does anyone know of a way to stop this?
Re: Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
yeah, start using kaspersky.
Re: Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
Call rome and ask for the illuminati or stop using public trackers.
Re: Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
I don't know of anyone (save yourself) who runs IE, and McAfee hasn't been trusted since the original owner professed to distributing virus' to promote the sale of his av.
In any event, what your seeing is probably a 'pop-up' scam. If either of those sites were 'infected'... there would be alot more ink in the cloud about it.
I use Kaspersky and Opera (and Firefox only when I need to). I regularly visit both of those sites and I've never seen anything like you describe.
Opera is FAR more secure than anything you could ADD to Firefox. Those who take the time to learn it's features, rarely go back.
Re: Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
You get viruses on your computer by simply visiting mininova or piratebay?
Funny.
First time I heard about that. I wonder why nobody came up with this before.
I'm not affected by viruses (Mac) but I can hardly believe this.
Re: Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
Keep laughing Mac-boy... you could be infected and not even know it.
Re: Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
have you installed every windows update ??
Re: Mininova & Pirate Bay Trojans
As someone said before, switch to a real antivirus like Kaspersky. Mcafee was good back in the 1990s but not anymore. Also, use Superantispyware free edition to scan your system from time to time - this can detect and remove some pretty rare and bad ass spyware/trojan infections.
But there is only so much AV programs can do to protect you from ALL kinkds of threats. Before you download any torrents, make sure to read the comments. If the file looks suspicious, use a online scanner service such as virustotal to scan it just to be on the safe side.
