Torque

I'm watching Top Gear so I decided to look up the definition of 'torque' on Wikipedia.
Up popped a page full of vectors and scary looking formulas. I feel nauseous and slighty frightened by my inability to understand what it actually means:cry:

Is this one of those things like 'offside'? One of them witchy things most men and few women understand?

torque = the measure of force applied torsionally (twisting).
Usually for cars it is measured in ft-lbs (foot pounds)
So 200lb-ft is the amount of force required to move 200lbs one foot, or to move 1lb 200 feet, or to move 100lbs 2 feet, etc..

That's my uneducated understanding of it anyway. :P

It also relates proportionally to the RPM of the engine and the Horsepower. Higher torque and higher RPM = higher horse power.

Good effort though Tesco.

Ladies, ladies.
From a practical standpoint, "torque" is easily understood.

Imagine this scenario...
Your car is standing still on wet pavement.
Now, mash the gas pedal (you're in gear, obviously).

The more torque your engine has, the lower the RPMs it'll reach before you lose traction and the tires spin.

Torque is what pushes you back in the seat when you romp on the accelerator.
Torque gets you off the line fast, horsepower gets you higher top end.

Basically.
