Hardrive Cable

i'm trying to buy a longer harddrive cable. the one that connects the hd to the mobo. wats it called again? and when i buy, like a 24' cable, is it 24' total, or 24' from connector to connector. cuz i'm haveing a problem. i need to move my hd tray to the top of my 5.25' slots, but the hd cable doesn go that high. just so u know, i have 1 hd at the bottom of the pc, and a hd rack with 1 hd at the 5.25' bays. the prob is, the rack is old, and its longer, so the farthest it can go is up to the mobo, but there is like .5' sticking out, and i need to close the door. here's some pics:

the rack is sticking out because the mobo is rite behind it. i can move the rack to the top of the bays, but the hd cable isn't long enough to connect the hd at the bottom (120 gb fixed hd) to the hd rack. help me out. does the 24' cable mean 24' in between the connectors? or in total. thanks

i think the size refers to overall size, not the size in between connectors,

infact im pretty sure it refers to overall size

You can get 2 different IDE ribbon cable. One has just black connectors on all ends and the one you need has one blue one where it connects to the motherbooard.

The normal IDE ribbon can be used for cd roms and i think zip drives.

If you just use a normal one for your hard drive, u might get an error like "80 cable not connected" Im not to sure about the exact error message but you will get something like that.

If you have an older pc it might be ok to use a normal cable.

i always thought the hd cable was thinner than the ide cable for cd drives. anyway, so i can buy an extension for the hd cable? where?

for the hd cable, am i looking for ATA133/100 cables?
