PlayStation 3 Finally Hacked With a USB Stick?

" Will the PS3 piracy floodgates open now four years after launch?

The PlayStation 3 has one of the best copy protection schemes in the history of consoles. In the near-four years since its launch, the machine will only run with legitimate games. The Xbox 360 and Wii, on the other hand, were cracked to run home-burned games years ago.

While there's been much work behind getting the PlayStation 3 cracked by those in the pirate industry, there wasn't much success – until maybe now. According to an Australian mod chip source, hackers and crackers in China and/or Hong Kong have developed a USB stick that will allow the PlayStation 3 to boot games copied to on the hard disk drive.

Kotaku has been in contact with OzModChips regarding this product, and the seller claims that the device is real and is most definitely not a hoax. OzModChips is currently taking preorders for the USB stick, which is called the "PS JailBreak," for $169.99 AUD.

The contact at OzModChips doesn't know much about how the USB device works, other than "it tricks the ps3 into thinking its a dev unit…"

The chip is supposedly going to be available at the end of the month. Check out the video below to see it in action."

Damn, if this isn't a hoax then this is major achievement for the piracy scene as well as the playstation scene.

You have to hand it to playstation though for their security they put on their system... 4 years since launch, and we are just beginning to play backups.
That is pretty damn good, considering all the masters in the piracy scene who have tried, to no avail, to crack the ps3.

Read the damn method they used to crack the xbox360 firmware on the dvd drive..... That shit will blow your mind... How much money/time goes into these processes.

I'm happy about this because Sony pissed me off when they arbitrarily decided to take away the Linux feature- that I paid for. Screw them. I think the price is too high for the USB chip, but hopefully this can be duplicated by someone(s) smart...

Don’t make your expectations go high. This is a hack for a short time only. with simple firmware update sony can bring us to the ground & we will never reach PS3 heaven. For such poor hack how would they expect us to pay 147$. What a fraud. PS3 is 250$ & its hack is 147$. is this hack cost technically as PS3 do. It is a USB for god’s sake.

They'll remove it, but you can still get the firmware that it's available on from the interweb and change it yourself. Jtagging your xbox can't be done on recent firmware, and it's still hugely popular!
