what is the tip for changing the number of available ports

sorry for my poor english...english is not my mother tongue. but i know you are going to know what i mean...
my com systerm is....xp pro sp3...
could you give me any tip for increase the mumber of available ports...?
should i use any software?....
do i have to adjust something in system files?
please...help me...! i'm just a new torrent user....
