Which one of these is the best desktop environment?

There is really no such thing as "best" - only what YOU prefer for your own situation.

My own preference (especially for my ancient laptop) would probably be LXDE, as found in Knoppix, but it's not even listed as a choice here, so it looks like I can't vote for it. :(

And what about Ubuntu's (default) Unity interface - how does that fit in?
