If you're unable to pass the interview it's unlikely you'll be able to survive at What.CD.

My knowledge of music encoding isn't great but I still passed the interview last week. Other than a few basic encoding principles it doesn't get much more taxing than that...

Very true. It's hardly difficult. A shame how some people who aren't banned from it sometimes just take the easier path anyway.
