I wonder sometimes if beloved series like Sports Night, Firefly or Arrested Development aren't better off for their quick termination rather than slowly dying on the vine like Weeds or Friends.
Of course, it's better if the creators get to determine the fate of their show-The Wire being the classic example, rather than just killing it unexpectedly (like Deadwood), because then you get "closure" but a short run can be a blessing compared to a protracted death.
That's why most sequels are so horribly bad...it's very difficult to recapture the flash that illuminated the original, especially after it's been analyzed to death.
