Noob question about AVC files

I have just gone from torrents to NZB, I want to d/l highres films with DTS etc.

If the file is an AVC file, how can I play with a media player?

Installing the appropriate codec. Personally, I use CoreAVC with a dsnative fork of mplayer under Windows.
