when i download something from shareaza the dl speed is really high like 100kb/s when i only have 56k and on average it should download @ 5kb/s. i made sure the connection was set us for my speed too. :huh:

Depends the source you're downloading from. :)
hi....u r using a different rate....
u r using kb instead of kB
click on tools
shareaza settings
general
show rates in
then change it to kB
Follow the instruction of Fusion coz I abandoned Shareaza. Really not adapted to this p2p program. :)
Like what fusion explorer said, you have it on kilobits instead of kilobytes. For kilobits, its your kilobyte speed times 8 or 7, I forgot which one.

8 bits to 1 byte, 56k modems are usaly capable of doing 4 -6 kilobytes which is about 48 kilobits. it's impossibe to do 100 kilobits on 56k

Yeah, a phoneline can't handle more than 56K unless it uses the two extra wires which phones don't use. (Like with DSL)
Dial-up uses software compression then reports the after-compression speed.
The hardware never exceeds 56k, but the software compression can allow COMPRESSABLE data to exceed 56k at least briefly.
