heres my setup i have an ethernet card and a cable modem, the computer hooks up with the cable via usb, can i then run cat45 cable out of my ethernet to an xbox or is that only in from cable type

just run the cat5 cab le from the modem to the xbox...yah that works, just buy a router for a permenat solution
i don't wanna buy a router though im cheap
then u dont have to buy one, u just wont have internet one ur pc at the same time...unless u buy a switch then u need another pci network card for your computer

What you could do, is connect the modem from the USB to your PC and by rights you should have another port on the modem to connect a crossover to your xbox and they can both be on the internet.
But this is a bad idea if you plan to transfer files from the xbox to the PC because most modems have a max tranfer rate of 10mb over lan and it would be slow.
