not sure if this was done yet but the thermaltake orb looked something like this from a side view (colors dont match):

how bout turning the spiraly fins INTO the fan itself??? (of course covering the outer portions of the blades so that the air would only go down...)
the fins are the heatsink, spinning them would be pretty hard seeing as they are so big and metal-ly, also if they're spinning they won't be transferring heat from the CPU, so you'll need another bunch of big fins to make a heat-sink, but you would want to spin them too, so you'll need another big heatsink underneath
hehe let me toil over this idea for a while... possible it is, but not very effiecent it wont be...
